In support of NHP Week, we are encapsulating one of their blog posts here. Lianne Phillipson-Webb, a nutritionist, author, and mother herself, lists what she believes are the four most important supplements to take that are beneficial for everyone in the family. Read the entire article, from CHFA’s website, here, and as the image on this post states, refer back to their website throughout the week for 23 reasons to take supplements.
1. Omega-3s are extra important because the human body cannot produce them, so we have to obtain them from foods or supplementation. Studies have shown that Omega-3s have many benefits, including improving cardiovascular health and cognitive development, reducing inflammation and stabilizing mood.
2. Multivitamins are great because they are an affordable “insurance policy” for the entire family. For many families on the go, and for picky eaters, multivitamins can fill in any nutritional gaps.
3. Probiotics help create or maintain a healthy digestive tract, which is important to eliminate harmful bacteria, toxins and other waste products. When we make poor food choices, suffer from chronic stress and are exposed to environmental toxins, the balance in favour of good bacteria can shift, causing a variety of problems including a decreased immune system.
4. Vitamin D is needed for healthy bones and muscles, especially in children and the elderly. There is growing evidence that vitamin D may reduce the risk of some types of cancer, particularly colorectal and breast cancers. You can get vitamin D from exposure to sunlight, your diet (especially if you eat foods fortified with vitamin D), or by taking vitamin supplements.
