Adaptogen Profile: What is Schisandra Berry?

Author: Riley Webster | June 25, 2019

Originating in China, Japan, Korea and Russia, the schisandra berry is the fruit of the Chinese magnolia vine. Mainly used in Russian and Chinese traditional medicines, it’s been used for centuries to help heal health conditions such as liver issues, insomnia, and fatigue.

Centuries ago, hunters and gatherers would use schisandra berries to combat fatigue and increase endurance when under physical stress. According to Chinese folklore, the schisandra berry can “calm the heart and quiet the spirit”. It has also been used for years as a healing tonic.

It is known for containing five distinct flavours – bitter, sweet, sour, salty and hot.  Revered for its beauty benefits, schisandra berries are chock-full of antioxidants, phytochemicals, and adaptogenic properties to help mitigate the damaging effects of stress and help the body glow from the inside out.

Here’s how schisandra berry can help you on your path to wellness:

1. Nourishes skin and hair

Schisandra berries contain powerful phytochemicals that help to tone, moisturize, and heal skin. Packed with antioxidants, and vitamins C and E, schisandra berries help the skin to stay moisturized, full, and may even protect against UVB skin damage.

2. May decrease signs of aging

Schisandra berries are high in antioxidants. This can help protect the body against free radical damage to slow the aging process while boosting vitality. Schisandra berries also help the body increase its production of antioxidants to help continually nourish skin, boost the immune system, and prevent illness.

3. May improve liver health

A healthy, functioning liver is essential for the body to rid itself of toxins. Schisandra berries aid in liver detoxification to help reduce the signs of stress and inflammation in the skin. Plus, when we have a healthy liver, we have stronger immunity and are more able to ward off illness.

4. Helps boost mental clarity

Schisandra helps reduce cortisol levels (our stress hormone), and regulate changes in serotonin and adrenaline caused by stress. This helps to mitigate brain fog and mental exhaustion. Not only do the berries help fight fatigue, they can also boost mental clarity, help improve focus and concentration, and support memory retention.

5. Supports adrenal health

Due to schisandra berries being an adaptogenic plant, they help improve our adrenal health by normalizing the body’s systems and bringing it back into homeostasis. Healthy adrenal glands contribute to hormonal balance, stress resistance, and physical and emotional resiliency.
