What is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is an oral detoxification practice that has been around for literally thousands of years. It comes from Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional style of medicine developed in India many years ago. Ayurveda looks at health and wellness from a whole-body perspective. It focuses on mind, body and spirit to help bring balance to your state of health. Oil pulling is simply the action of swishing oil through the mouth for a period of time. The oil works to break down plaque buildup(1) by absorbing bacteria and toxins. As you swish the oil around, it becomes thicker and milky in appearance. After oil pulling for approximately 20 minutes, the oil is spit out, along with all the bacteria and toxins it has absorbed.

Studies have shown that oil pulling can improve bad breath(2), and reduce bacteria(3) in the mouth that contributes to tooth decay.

Though traditionally oil pulling is done with sesame oil, you can also use coconut oil. Coconut oil is a great option because it contains lauric acid, which is proven to have anti-microbial benefits. While oil pulling is not a replacement for brushing, flossing or visiting the dentist, it is an easy way to effectively improve the health of your teeth and gums. oil on a spoon for oil pulling
