Spirulina is an edible, one-celled organism that has been growing on earth for over 3.5 billion years. It is most often referred to as a blue-green algae, though technically it is classified as a cyanobacterium. Spirulina is capable of photosynthesis and oxygen production, making it an excellent source of chlorophyll. This aids in our blood health and detoxification pathways. Per serving, it contains one of the highest amounts of plant-based protein in the world and is one of the few plant sources of all the essential amino acids. Spirulina is therefore classified as a ‘complete protein’, and makes it a fantastic addition to a vegan or vegetarian diet. As it also has a very high concentration of bioavailable iron, this is one more reason for spirulina to be a staple in a plant-based diet.
Since it is so rich in iron and protein, spirulina can also aid in red blood cell production and muscle repair within the body. The high protein content can also help stabilize blood sugar when taken between meals. Spirulina is known for helping reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis, and contains beta-carotene, which helps support eye health and night vision.
Spirulina is grown in alkaline water and is commonly cultivated and harvested from open-air, freshwater pools. Because it is so easy to grow and harvest, it is considered an extremely sustainable food source.
Organika’s Spirulina is consistently examined for purity and quality to meet our high standards. Grown in Mongolia, in an area with some of the most pristine air in the world. The location is unique because it is safe from pesticides, uses overhead protection to stop bacteria and debris from getting into pools and is free from heavy metals. The algae is grown in water extracted from deep pools nearly 400m below the ground. This ensures that the product is uncontaminated, as other spirulina sources have been known to carry heavy metals. The product is produced in an attached ISO certified, HACCP certified, Kosher certified, Organic certified, CMP facility. Our testing is done to ensure we not only meet but exceed Health Canada standards. Our algal toxin testing includes microcystins, BMAA, benzopyrene, pesticides, and aflatoxins.

Q: Is spirulina a new discovery as a superfood?
A: No, it’s actually been enjoyed as a dietary supplement around the globe for centuries. Historically, it was used in Mexico by the Aztecs to make dried green cakes used for increasing stamina on long trips. Sounds like a centuries-old energy ball recipe!
Q: Is spirulina helpful for seasonal allergies?
A: Yes! Seasonal and environmental allergy symptoms can be decreased with spirulina, particularly allergic rhinitis. This may show as a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, red, itchy, and watery eyes and swelling around the eyes. Be proactive with your allergies and get spirulina into your daily supplement routine!
Q: What is the difference between Organic Spirulina and Regular Spirulina?
A: Organic spirulina has to be cultivated and processed according to organic certification standards. The company has to set up a quality management system as well as quality control and traceability systems according to these organic standards. Regular spirulina undergoes the same process but the farm and USDA or PACS do not certify the finished product. The regular product is also subjected to herbicide and pesticide tests. Results of these tests are all within the high standard limits set by Health Canada.
Q: I hear spirulina can be good for my mouth and dental health. Can you tell me more?
A: Yes, it’s been shown that rinsing with a spirulina mouthwash can reduce dental plaque and gingivitis. Try chewing Organika’s Spirulina Tablets to freshen your breath and balance your mouth bacteria. Just remember to rinse!
Q: Can I take too much spirulina?
A: You can take too much of pretty much anything. As spirulina is a whole food, it’s perfectly safe to treat it more like a food than a supplement (it’s just in a handy tablet form for ease of routine). Organika’s Spirulina Tablets contain significant amounts of calcium, niacin, potassium, magnesium, B vitamins and iron, as well as a complete set of essential amino acids. Pop away!
I am great to raise iron levels naturally.
