The Science

Collagen is the most abundant form of protein in our body, which provides us with strength, elasticity, tone and structure. It acts like the ‘glue’ to hold the body together. We require it for healthy skin, connective tissues, muscles and bones. Internally, we have 27 different types of collagen, but there are three types that we use in the most abundance.

  • Type 1 Collagen primarily goes towards the health of our hair, skin and nails; this type is found in marine and bovine skins
  • Type 2 Collagen works best at building connective tissues, ligaments and cartilage, and is high in poultry bones and cartilage
  • Type 3 Collagen builds muscles and organs and is found in bovine hides

Since collagen is primarily found in animal skin and connective tissues, it makes sense that supplemental collagen is sourced from the skins, hides, scales, bones and cartilage of animals. Organika’s BioCell Collagen capsules are sourced from the sternum (breastbone) of cage-free chickens, raised without the use of hormones or antibiotics. Sternal cartilage is a rich source of type 2 collagen, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate, and closely mirrors the composition of human joint cartilage. Hyaluronic acid does an excellent job at helping retain water to keep your tissues well lubricated and moist. Chondroitin sulfate is an integral structural component of cartilage and is what gives it its shock-absorbing properties. Put these three nutrients together and you get an amazing healthy joint and cartilage cocktail.

BioCell Collagen utilizes a patented Bio-Optimization™ process which ensures remarkable bioavailability as well as rapid absorption into the body. More than 20 clinical studies including five human clinical trials on BioCell Collagen support its effectiveness and safety in promoting joint health and skin beauty. The unique synergy of hydrolyzed type 2 collagen, low molecular weight hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate offers multi-dimensional nutritional support for the health of connective tissues such as skin, joint, tendon and ligament. For more on BioCell Collagen, read their official benefits page or clinical studies page.

You may be asking the question, “If collagen is such an abundant protein, why would I need to supplement?” As we age, our endogenous collagen formation naturally decreases. This can be up to 50% by the time we hit age 45. The more active we are, the more of these collagen peptides we need to heal after exercise and sport. Plus lifestyle choices that promote free radical damage like smoking, chronic stress and chemical exposure from our food, water, and personal care products can use up our collagen faster.

All these losses can contribute to signs of premature aging, like fine lines and wrinkles, brittle nails, cellulite and dry skin, as well as joint and ligament issues like injuries, weakness and arthritis. Collagen also has been shown to increase moisture within the body, like in our skin and joints. It is great for healing the digestive tract and reducing inflammation. Look for improved immune responses, mood, blood sugar and bone and joint health with collagen supplementation.

Q: Have we always been deficient in collagen? Why do we need to supplement now?

A: Collagen used to be quite prevalent in our diet, when we used and ate more of the whole animal. Natural collagen sources like skin, bones, joints and organs were all used regularly in cooking. A long-simmering bone broth or slow-cooked meat on-the-bone stew can provide an abundance of collagen and gelatin. We’re also not cooking at home from scratch as much. Supplementation can make up for our lack of traditional ways of cooking.

Q: What are the various types of collagen supplementation?

A: Adding gelatin powder, bone broth powder or collagen powder to your food and beverages are all amazing ways to supplement with collagen proteins. Organika’s Bovine Gelatin Powder is going to make your foods jelly-like; those proteins are a little more work for your body to digest and absorb but are less processed and contain other synergistic nutrients. Our Chicken and Beef Bone Broth powders are easy to add to hot beverages, soups and stews to fortify them with collagen and other beneficial nutrients found in bone broth. Hydrolyzed collagen powder, like that in Organika’s Enhanced Collagen, Marine Collagen or Full Spectrum Collagen is the most versatile – it can be added to hot or cold beverages or food and is already broken down into a format that is the easiest to digest and absorb. And of course, BioCell Collagen capsules are an alternative to powders which you may find easier to fit into your lifestyle. Many choices ensure you can easily adopt a collagen supplement into your everyday routine!

Q: How can I tell if this product is working for me?

A: Signs that your collagen levels have increased include: stronger and faster-growing hair and nails, hydrated skin, reduced appearance of wrinkles, and reduced joint pain.

Q: Is BioCell Collagen safe and supported by science?

A: Yes, BioCell Collagen has been safely and successfully used by millions of consumers since its introduction in the market in 1997. It was affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) by an independent expert safety panel following rigorous scientific reviews not only in safety and toxicology data, but on manufacturing processes according to Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP) for food. More than 20 clinical studies support the safety, bioavailability, and effectiveness of BioCell Collagen and its constituents. BioCell Collagen has been granted multiple US and international patents for being unique and highly useful.

Q: How are the chickens raised?

A: The chickens are raised and slaughtered in a humane manner consistent with both the US National Chicken Council Animal Welfare guidelines as well as being consistent with those dictated by the European Union Animal Welfare legislations. Chickens are raised without the use of antibiotics or hormones, and are provided freedom to roam cage free. BioCell Collagen is made exclusively in the USA and Europe.

More than 20 clinical studies support the safety, bioavailability and effectiveness of Biocell Collagen and its constituents.
