Gratitude is the Currency of Happiness

Gratitude is the Currency of Happiness. I love this time of the year!  A season of change and letting go!  Fall brings so much more than fallen leaves, crisp mornings and cozy fireside movies - Fall brings a time to reflect and be thankful for so many things! This weekend is one of my favourite holidays – even more so than Christmas and Easter (well, maybe Easter too for those little egg chocolates). Thanksgiving has been a traditional holiday for me from as long as I can remember! Growing up, I always loved the art projects in school, the turkey cutouts, the smell of my mom baking pies the week before ( a tradition I carry on today with my daughters ) and the huge feast my mom put on every year!  I remember as a kid the feeling of excitement to see all my cousins, aunts and uncles for dinner and being so happy to be surrounded by everyone I loved.  A sense of contentment, love and happiness – all of which today I feel is the currency of gratitude! Thanksgiving to me has evolved over the last decade or two as I raise my daughters and carry on the tradition of hosting the annual dinner in my home.  A time where a few families join ours for a big meal, a few board games and the traditional “ what are you most thankful “ around the table before we eat.  It gives each of us an opportunity to share with those we love the things we appreciate, are thankful for and what truly makes us happy – a state of reflection and gratitude. Every year I love to hear everyone’s things that they are thankful for – most especially my daughters!  I spend a lot of time teaching them to be grateful for all the moments they have in their life, the opportunities that they have experienced, the family that love them dearly, the friendships that they make and most importantly their health.  Every year, my daughters surprise me with their heartwarming thanks to whatever they are most grateful for – making our Thanksgiving traditional even more bucket filling. I always like to take some time to reflect (most especially when I am in my yoga class) to focus on a few things that I am grateful for everyday!  I even have a gratitude journal!   I truly believe when we can find things to be thankful for (both good and bad) – it awakens our sense of happiness, provides us with a state of contentedness and teaches us to be humble and honoured within our lives. Thanksgiving is most definitely an excellent time for each of us (whichever your tradition is)  to reflect, acknowledge and communicate what makes our heart full, what moments, people or things we are most grateful for and to share that with others to do so as well. A few of the things that are on my list this coming year and what I have spent my last few days reflecting on are the following:
  • My health: I am always grateful to taking care of my body, respecting my body and that I am living my life with good health.
  • My growth: Growth (personally and professionally) are both significant for me.  This last year I have experienced growth in both those areas from both positive and negative ways.  I have found that without both of those experiences, the growth I have made wouldn't have been possible – So I most definitely am grateful for those.
  • My family: I am and always will feel truly blessed to have such an amazing and loving family.  At the end of the day – My family is the core of my soul.  I am forever thankful for all my loved ones – most especially my two daughters.
I encourage you all to take some time this upcoming weekend ( while indulging in pumpkin pies, turkey, brussel sprouts and your Thanksgiving traditions) to reflect and share the things you are most grateful for and what makes your heart full. Lastly, don't forget to take your digestive enzymes ahead of your Thanksgiving feast ( as I know how much I like to indulge during the weekend as well ) – Happy Thanksgiving!
