Complete protein
Protein is an essential macronutrient that is an important component of every cell in the body. Your body needs it to build and repair tissues and make crucial body chemicals like enzymes and hormones. Complete proteins are proteins that contain all the nine essential amino acids (protein building blocks) that our bodies can’t produce on their own. Animal based products like meat, dairy and eggs have protein in spades, but they should be consumed in moderation since they are also sources of cholesterol. When eating a plant-based diet, complete protein can be harder to come by – you may need to look into your food’s amino acid profile to make sure you have all the pieces needed to put your protein puzzle together. Complete protein can be found in some plant-based foods, such as:
- Grains like quinoa, buckwheat and amaranth
- Soybean derivatives like tofu and tempeh
- Spirulina, a type of blue-green algae
- Seeds like hemp and chia
