An antioxidant that is naturally found in almost every cell in the body, L-glutathione is found in high amounts in the liver where it plays an important role in detoxification. The more oxidative stress (i.e. free radical exposure) we’re under, the more antioxidants including glutathione we need, and we can’t always keep up with production. Oral supplementation can help fill the gap.

Glutathione is an antioxidant that is naturally produced in plants and fungi, some bacteria and archaea, and animals including humans. It is present in almost every cell in the body, and plays roles in detoxification, balancing inflammation, mitochondrial support, and keeping our whole body looking and feeling ship-shape.
One of its most important roles has to do with detoxification. As a source of sulphur, there are many liver functions in which it plays a part. It’s crucial for detoxification of drugs and xenobiotics. It can help transport mercury out of cells and the brain.
As an antioxidant, it helps to prevent damage from free radicals, peroxides, lipid peroxides and heavy metals. It’s also shown to decrease signs of premature aging like sun spots, decreased skin elasticity and wrinkles.
Other roles include helping to make some of the molecules that help with inflammatory balance like leukotriene and prostaglandins. In plants, it is involved with stress management.
Low glutathione levels are seen often when one is depleted - like in neurodegenerative disorders, trauma, burns, chronic exposures to chemical toxins and alcohol, and athletic overtraining. These are all excellent times to consider L-Glutathione supplementation.

Q: I’ve heard glutathione can be used to whiten the skin. Is that true? A: Glutathione is a common agent taken by those attempting to lighten their skin colour. It is taken orally as well as being found in skin cream. The science behind this use is still unclear, however.
Q: Why do I need to take glutathione if my body makes it? A: When we have higher needs (ie more toxins to process) or lower raw materials (poor diet) we may not have enough glutathione to go around. We also decrease our production naturally as we age. Supplementation can help.
Q: How do I decrease my need for glutathione, so I can get more benefits from the amount that I have? A: To decrease your needs, start with decreasing your consumption of alcohol and POPs (persistent organic pollutants, often from pesticides in conventionally grown foods). Also increase other antioxidant intake, like foods rich in vitamins A, C, E and the minerals zinc and selenium.
Q: What else can I do to increase my natural production of glutathione? A: As cysteine is required for the production of glutathione and is often the rate-limiting nutrient, taking cysteine as N-acetylcysteine (NAC) can help raise your levels. Alcohol-free beer and almonds are two of the foods that can increase glutathione levels. What a great way to buffer your party night liver affects!
Q: Does glutamine need to be taken orally to be effective? A: Glutamine can be taken orally, topically, through IV, inhaled, or sprayed up the nose and all can increase glutathione levels in the body.
