Diabetes, age, kidney stones and bladder complications are all risk factors linked to urinary tract infections (UTIs). Q: Why is it called Chanca Piedra? Is that the Latin name?
A: Chanca Piedra is actually the Spanish name of the Phyllanthus niruri plant. The Spanish name, when translated to English, means “stone crusher.” for its reported historical uses.

Q: Is Chanca Piedra only used in Ayurvedic medicine?
A: Actually, the Phyllanthus genus of shrubs, trees and herbs are grown in tropical regions all over the world, and have been used as traditional remedies in many cultures: from India to South America to Africa! 

Q: Tell me more about phytochemicals. They seem to be popping up everywhere!
A: The term phytochemical refers to ‘plant chemicals’ - molecules that are made and found in plants. These phytochemicals or phytonutrients are beneficial to the plant in many ways - they act as a major part of their immune system and protect them from foreign invaders. As plants can’t run away from their enemies, producing their own biological weapons is quite handy. When we eat plants that contain these phytonutrients, we humans get to benefit from them in much of the same ways. They are often anti-microbial, antioxidant, immune supportive, etc. More and more of these chemicals are being discovered every day. For the average person that does not have a degree in plant chemistry, the best way to benefit from these plant nutrients is to eat a rainbow of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis, and fortify our meals with herbs and spices.

Q: What else can I do to prevent UTIs?
A: A big factor is quite simply drinking ample water. As water flows through our urinary tract and out our urine, it’s helping to flush out wastes and foreign bacteria. Bacteria stick to the urinary tract lining and multiply. The best course of action in the prevention of UTIs is to drink enough clean water every day. This means not overdoing the dehydrating beverages like coffee, tea, alcohol and pop and other sugary beverages. Good old plain water is the way to go!
